Car Seat Safety
Posted on 03-28-2011

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently suggested that children under the age of two be required to ride in rear facing car seats. The law currently states that children are required to do so until they are a year old.

Both groups site safety as the reason for the proposed change. They looked closely at crash evidence and found that one year old children are five times less likely to be injured in a collision if they are in a rear facing car seat. Because toddler's heads are large and their necks small, the impact brought on by a collision (where a child was in a front facing car seat) could cause spinal cord injuries.

The groups also suggested children should be required to ride in booster seats until age 12. Children currently use booster seats until they are 4ft 9 inches tall. Booster seats are designed to adjust a child's height so that the vehicle’s seat belts are positioned correctly on the child should a crash occur. It was also suggested by both groups that children under the age of 13 ride in the back seat.

Keep in mind that these are currently just suggestions- not yet the law, but something to think about the next time you and your family "buckle up".
